Analysis Of The Book Glory Of The Confessor - 1678 Words
During the period of Gregory of Tours what was considered to be the difference between the magical and the miraculous? In order to attempt to answer this question this essay will examine two works from Gregory of Tours, the first from his book The History of the Franks which examines the case of Mummolus and his witches and the second from his book Glory of the Confessor which examines the case of the tomb of Criscentia. The first book gives an example of what was seen as sorcery and the second an example of the miraculous. This essay will argue that the difference between what was classified as magic and what was classified as miraculous during the time of Gregory of Tours in the early Medieval Period was determined by differences in both the perceived source of power of an act and the perceived motivation of the practitioner. This essay will then attempt to discover the origins of these perceived differences. The results of the magic in the case of Mummolus and the miracle in the case of Criscentia both achieved a very similar result. Namely, the result of each case was healing. In the case of Mummolus this takes the form of a concoction that can immediately cure dysentery and in the witches actively saving Mummolusââ¬â¢s life. In the words of the accused witches the goal was, ââ¬Å"to save Mummolusâ⬠. In the case of the miracles that occurred at the tomb of Criscentia the result was also that those afflicted with an ailment were cured.
